Starting in September 2021, Mini Badminton is a session that runs on Fridays from 5pm – 7pm in the National Badminton Centre (Courts 5-7) for roughly 6 to 9-year-olds. This is aimed at newer players, with an emphasis on developing badminton skills, exercise and having fun.
Players around nine who have played before and can hit a shuttle confidently and rally a bit should aim to join the early club session at the same time (5pm – 7pm) in the main sports hall. However, Mini’s should be able to manage that skill level within its session if the time doesn’t suit; there’s a waiting list; they want to come with friends etc.
The cost is £6 a week (pay only when you attend) because we have an improved court/coach ratio with numbers limited to 21.
Over the years, we have ran over 175 sessions with over 3000 attendees. Half of the players who came along on the first night are still involved with the club, with Atharv now #5 on the under-14 boys singles ranking list. The session helps meet the demand we see for youngsters starting the sport, we have experienced young coaches and a decent pathway for players in the sport.
We recognise the help from Glasgow Sport with a grant from its Sport and Physical Activity Fund to help get Mini’s started and a mention for Michelle Junnor, who organised Minis at the start.
